Mac couldn’t remember ever being so angry in his life. Even his fury at Alastor when he had discovered his mortal crime of murdering Tristan paled in comparison to what he felt right now. The betrayal struck him to the core.
“You voted with the rest of them to separate me and Tristan permanently,” he raged at Michael.
The archangel looked back at him serenely.
“Why?” Mac yelled.
“Tristan is becoming more and more powerful, the longer he feeds from you,” Michael explained.
“But he barely uses his powers.”
“No, but the other incubi do. Crimes of a sexual nature are rising exponentially and it’s because of Tristan being the one in power down there.”
“There were other ways to go about this. Tristan could have reined them in for you.”
Michael shook his head. “No, he couldn’t. It’s out of his control and this was the only way we could see to stop things escalating even further.”
“But he needs to feed from me. You know this.”
“We know, but we’re hoping this might help him too.”
“What do you mean?”
“The demon will starve without you going down there.”
“And how the hell will that help?”
Michael gave him a look that told him he didn’t appreciate the continued show of temper.
“I’m sorry, but I don’t see how Tristan dying will help matters.”
“Tristan may not die, just the demon residing in him.”
The word ‘may’ sprang out at Mac and he had to stop his temper rising again. “Demons who die in the Underworld remain down there, tortured souls, trapped without their powers.”
“Yes, but Tristan isn’t an ordinary demon.”
“No, he’s the other half of my soul and you’ve just separated us forever.” Mac’s voice rose with his temper once again. A couple of lingering angels looked in his direction before departing the area.
Michael placed a hand on Mac’s arm and he felt his temper recede. He wasn’t sure he wanted it to. His anger was keeping him going right now and without it, what did he have left?
“Tristan never truly died,” Michael explained. “His human body still lives. It has merely been taken over by the incubus.”
“I don’t understand.”
“If you stab a demon through the heart, the demon and the host die, though in most cases, such as that of Alastor, the human form is nothing more than an illusion, one which, without demonic powers, cannot be sustained outside of the Underworld or here in the Realm of Angels. Tristan’s human body doesn’t need sex with an angel to survive, only the demon requires that. In theory, the demon will starve to death but Tristan, the human, will remain.”
“I love the way you say this is in theory,” Mac said.
Michael reached out to touch him again, but Mac stepped back out of his reach. Michael sighed but didn’t try to soothe him again. “You have to understand, Mac, this situation has never happened before. It’s all theoretical.”
“And you’ve decided to test your theories on Tristan. That’s just great!”
“Things have gone too far. We have no choice. If I had known
